Kiptopeke State Park and the Barrier Islands Center

On Wednesday, June 20th, we drove south on Rt. 13 to Kiptopeke State Park, which is situated near the mouth of the great Chesapeake Bay.  We traveresed sandy beaches that were protected by a man-made barrier island chain comprised of concrete battleships sunk in shallow waters of the Bay.  After wading in the Bay and exploring some of the wildlife on the shore and in the water, we got in the car and headed back north to stop at the Barrier Islands Center, which was celebrating its tenth anniversary.  Our trip coincided with a discussion about our readings from Tom Horton's Bay Country, an ode to the complex relationship between nature and culture that defines the Eastern Shore and greater Chesapeake Bay environment.
