Excursion to Wallops Island, VA

On Tuesday, June 19th, our class was escorted by Jack, an educator at the Marine Science Consortium, to Wallops Island, a barrier island southwest of Chincoteague that is owned and occupied by the US Navy and NASA.  As access to the beach at Wallops is restricted, we thought the excursion would give the students a more intimate and personal opportunity to explore the sea's edge.  The trip to Wallops coincided with our reading and discussion of Rachel Carson's The Edge of the Sea; we asked students to draw connections between Carson's eloquently detailed descriptions of life on the "rim of the shore" and their beachcombing experience.
